AURONA Study

Client

Aurinia Pharmaceuticals (NASDAQ: AUPH) is a biopharmaceutical company focused on the development of novel therapies for patients with rare diseases.

Project

Aurinia hired me to design and develop a recruitment website for their AURONA clinical trial. This was my second project for Aurinia. Working with a client in a regulated industry like pharmaceuticals, I had to ensure that the website met regulatory requirements, was compliant with industry standards, and passed institutional review board (IRB) approval. This required frequent communication and close coordination with the client on content and design, and ensured the project was completed on time.

Solution

I used Webflow to design and develop this website, which allowed me to eliminate a lot of abstractions typical of other development methods. For example, Webflow has a powerful engine for handling complex animations natively within the platform. It was this animation engine that allowed me to create modal windows for this project and dynamic experiences. Specifically in the Qualification section, where a user can select multiple boxes to indicate their eligibility for the study, and after two selections a contact form would be rendered below.

The clinical trial was to be conducted in multiple sites across the United States. A custom Google Maps embed was created to display the locations of the trial sites across the country, to assist users in determining the nearest site to them.

Since pharmaceuticals is a highly regulated field, all content of the website had to be submitted and reviewed by the client's regulatory team and pass IRB approval. As a result, any redirects to third-party websites required a content disclaimer to be displayed before the redirect. On the About FSGS section, a link to a third-party website containing more information about the condition was provided. To ensure compliance, I wrote a custom script that would display a JavaScript alert box with a disclaimer message before having the user confirm their redirect to the third-party website.

Result

The client was very satisfied with the project, and described the website as being instrumental and very effective in raising awareness of the study to people with FSGS.
